A blog related to original AI artworks.
With the arrival of the “autumn of art,” various public exhibitions are about to be held. Among them, I submitted works to both the Shinseisaku Exhibition and the Kodo Exhibition, and in both cases my works were accepted for display. However, I did not receive any prizes.
For the Shinseisaku Exhibition, I submitted two paintings combined into one work, both including the name of Hilma af Klint.
Here is a photo of the work as exhibited.
I combined two pieces in order to make the work appear larger without changing the print size. I felt that submitting a large work to a public exhibition would draw more attention. However, I also did not want to actually change the print size, because while creating large hand-painted works requires tremendous effort, in the case of CG it is easy to enlarge them simply through printing. Thus, making them excessively large did not seem appropriate. I thought that by joining two pieces together I could realize this intention, but because I connected them exactly, I received criticism that “the connection is poor.” I thought that if I added frames, including one in the middle, it might solve the problem.
For the Kodo Exhibition, I submitted a work including the name of Klimt. This painting had been created some time ago, and I had long wanted to submit it to a public exhibition, though until now I had chosen other works instead.
At the review meeting, I explained that this work was an AI art piece and received various comments. Among them was the criticism that AI lacks the five senses, which is a weakness, but with regard to this particular painting, I was also told that the unevenness on the surface was undesirable. Since it was a single poster sheet mounted in a frame, it was difficult to stretch it perfectly flat. I realized that it would have been better if it had been backed with something more solid, even just cardboard. I once tried mounting an 80 cm square work on plywood, but then it became too heavy to carry. With cardboard, it would not be too heavy and could likely be stretched flat, so I plan to try that next time.
