I submitted works to both the Sankiten and the Shinseikiten, and all five of my entries were accepted. The two works I submitted to the Shinseikiten received the Encouragement Prize.
The following three pieces were submitted to the Sankiten. (The first two are 100 × 100 cm, and the last one is 55 × 55 cm. The size difference is because the last one had already been printed in advance. The first two were previously rejected from the Shunyo Exhibition. I had submitted three works to Shunyo, one of which I later replaced.)
Since the Sankiten begins on the 14th, I havenʼt seen it yet.
The two pieces I submitted to the Shinseikiten both received the Encouragement Prize as a set. (Each is 80 × 80 cm.)
Individual critiques were not officially offered, but I made a special request and received some comments. I was told there had been discussion about whether to award a prize, as the two pieces were so different in style that it was unclear what I was aiming for. Indeed, displaying them side by side may have appeared inconsistent. The piece on the upper left had been previously rejected from the FACE Exhibition and was re-submitted here. The one on the upper right was created separately and more recently. Considering the differences in detail between the two, displaying them at the same size may have created an imbalance. Next time I submit multiple works together, I would like to pay more attention to color and overall balance.
Let me add a bit more about the Shinseikiten. The notification of selection and award did not arrive before the exhibition opened on the morning of the 12th. So I inquired by email, and learned from the website that I had been selected and awarded. I also found out that the award ceremony was scheduled for 15:30, so I attended and received my certificate. The website also mentioned a reception at 17:00, but I did not attend that.
The exhibited works aligned fairly well with my own aesthetic preferences, but the award ceremony gave the impression of a somewhat closed and difficult-to-approach community. The fact that the award time wasnʼt mentioned in the postal notice (and the mail itself didn’t arrive beforehand) made the communication somewhat unclear for first-time exhibitors.
